Do you need a Bareback Pad? – In our opinion- YES.

If you are planning to do more than the odd jaunt around the field, we would strongly recommend a Bareback pad for both Horse and Rider comfort. TRY SITTING ON YOUR HANDS FOR 5 MINS AND YOU WILL HAVE AN IDEA WHAT YOUR SEAT BONES FEEL LIKE TO YOUR HORSES BACK!!

The type of pad you should use will depend on how often and long you plan to ride for. If you are an occasional bareback rider, who rides for short periods of time, there are many cheap and adequate pads on the market. BUT if you want to use your pad more regularly, a ‘well padded’ pad is a much better option. In our opinion, the ‘Christ Lammfelle Horsedream Bareback pads’ (from Horse Dream UK) are the best on the best on the market. These pads have lambskin against the horses back (panels are unlined to give maximum contact) a layer of hard wearing quilted cotton (like a good quality numnah) and a top layer of lambskin for the rider to sit on. The pads also have insert pockets either side of the spine with composite foam padding (padding can be removed if not required, and when washing) The padding gives extra comfort to the horse, especially if it has high withers, if the rider is of heavier build (remember those seat bones) and if you plan to ride for long distances/time.

With the Christ Lammfelle Horsedream pad you will feel the warmth of your horses’ body and all of its movements. You will also notice the freedom of movement your horse now has and how relaxed he feels. The pads are super comfy for the rider, giving a real feeling of security too and the lambskin acts as a shock absorber for both horse and rider – very therapeutic  Get closer to your horse, form a deeper bond, understand the signals your horse is giving you with the Bareback pad. Improve your riding, balance and position. The sheepskin bareback pad is therapeutic for your horses back; now recommended by many saddler and equine physiotherapists for horses that have had back injuries. Sheepskin increases blood flow to the areas it touches, improving muscle tone and use. Also recommended for horses with saddle fitting problems; these pads are treeless, soft/supple/flexible and can mould to any shape horse.

These bareback pads are used with a dressage girth (so there are no lumps and nothing to rub against your leg). They have D rings for a breast plate to help secure the pad in place if your horse/pony is a little round! They also have a D ring for stirrup attachment, if required, although I have to say that I am not a fan of stirrups with bareback pads! If you do use stirrups with any bareback pad, please always use good safety stirrups.

These Bareback pads are ideal for:

• Backing youngsters

• Schooling (used a lot on the continent for schooling dressage horses)

• Sensitive/cold backed horses

• Horses/ponies that have saddle fitting problems (these pads are treeless, with no pressure points and will fit any size/shape horse/pony)

• Novice riders (helps with balance and good rider position)

• All fields of Natural Horsemanship

• The sheer fun of bareback riding Lambskin/sheepskins have a high therapeutic value; they promote circulation, are temperature balancing, shock absorbing and prevent the development of sores. These products are also very easy to care for: Lambskin/sheepskin consist entirely of proteins, and therefore do not provide a breeding ground for bacteria or viruses. Regular shaking and airing will help to neutralise odours and keep the wool fresh, with the added attraction that it is naturally dirt resistant, supple and hard-wearing. All the Horsedream Bareback pads can be machine washed, with a sheepskin detergent, and tumble dried at low temperatures.

Happy hacking 
